Our dedicated team provides a comfortable experience so you can get a confident and radiant smile.

Our gentle and experienced dentist will thoroughly evaluate your teeth, gums, and oral tissues by:

  • Visual examination: We'll closely examine your teeth for signs of decay, cracks, or wear.
  • Gum health check: We'll assess your gums for inflammation, bleeding, or recession.

At Valley View Thornton, we use advanced technologies like dental X-rays to provide detailed images of your teeth and jawbone to identify underlying health issues.

Following the dental exam, our team will discuss the reports, answer any questions you may have and recommend a treatment plan. You'll get a detailed consultation about your dental health and all you need to do to maintain it. From preventive advice to therapeutic measures, we have you covered.

Remember, regular dental exams are crucial for maintaining good oral health. They allow for early detection of potential problems and reduce the risk of becoming more serious and costlier.

Schedule your appointment today and say goodbye to all your dental problems!

What Happens During a Hygiene Exam?

One of our expert dental hygienists will start your visit by cleaning your teeth and mouth. This includes extensively removing any plaque and tartar that has built up on your teeth and gums, which helps prevent gum disease and cavities.

After this, your hygienist will brush, floss and polish your teeth. X-rays may also be included in an exam if you are due, and our team may also recommend a fluoride treatment for your tooth enamel.

While cleaning your mouth, your hygienist also closely examines your teeth, gums, muscles and soft tissues so they can discuss any findings with you and your dentist. Sometimes, what they find may require further dental treatment or referral to one of our specialist partners.

What Does the Team Look For in a Hygiene Exam?

Expect our team to do the following during your exam:

  • A periodontal (gum disease) exam
  • An orthodontic evaluation
  • A general visual exam of your face, mouth, teeth and jaw
  • Screening for cancer

If we spot any potential problems, Dr. Alisha Evangeline Prince will work with you and the team to develop a plan for further treatment.

Additionally, there is a strong connection between good oral health and overall body health. Thanks to modern dental technology and training, our team can spot issues and risks during an exam like:

  • Diabetes
  • Oral cancer
  • Sleep apnea
  • Heart disease
  • Stroke
  • Premature births

What Can I Do to Care For My Teeth at Home?

With some teeth being so hard to reach, sometimes needing a filling or extraction can’t be avoided. However, we still hope to help our patients however we can. Dental sealants and fluoride treatments are two common methods to ward off tooth decay and keep teeth safe from bacteria.

Sealants are a special type of resin a dentist applies to the chewing surface of teeth. These protective shields last for up to 10 years and make it easier for patients to brush their teeth. Sealants are common among young children who are still learning to care for their developing teeth, but are equally beneficial for adults, too!

Fluoride treatments are usually part of a standard hygiene appointment with your dentist. During the exam, our team will apply this naturally-occurring, safe mineral to your teeth to both strengthen enamel and prevent tooth decay.

While fluoride is included in toothpaste and sometimes even added to city water supplies, our team will recommend an additional treatment if we think you’re at risk of tooth decay and could benefit from stronger enamel.
